James Buchanan

Name: James Buchanan
Main instrument:
Contemporary Guitar
Teaching focus:
I try impart a greater understanding of the instrument and music theory to my students. As well as an ability to play, understand and respect of all types of music.
Musical influences:
As a guitarist my influences range from traditional Jazz greats to modern experimental metal artists, including players such as Joe pass, John Scofield, Adam Jones, Robin Finck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pat Metheny, Ben Weinman and Josh Homme.
Career highlights:
Highlights that really stand out to me are not so much the big gigs but the ongoing opportunities i get to play with amazing musicians. I work with world class musicians everyday, be it classical, jazz, rock or pop which I find really exciting. I guess for me it's not the size or importance of the show but who you're playing it with.
The instrument you wish you could play:
The Double Bass. And I’ve finally been learning with Lou Ortiz, which has been amazing.
Scariest stage moment:
Too many to mention really. Doing a four hour gig with two hours notice, with a completely new band once was pretty scary. Recently playing Double Bass in a Symphony orchestra after only a few months of lessons is definitely up there. I really only get scared when I'm playing in front of other musicians.
What’s your favourite thing outside music?
Um .... there really isn't that much. I guess just hanging out with friends and relaxing, but then they're all musicians too, so music is all we talk about. I also have a real interest in Art and Design, although I have absolutely no talent in either.
