academic studies

A comprehensive music education involves both learning to play an instrument or sing, and an understanding of music theory. To this end ORC offers the following studies:

MUSICIANSHIP Musicianship at ORC is now structured as a comprehensive and graded course. Under most circumstances, students commence in the beginner classes and progress at a grade-per-year rate. Students who come into the program with existing experience/level of achievement will be assessed before being placed in an appropriately graded class.

All musicianship students will be entered by ORC for external AMEB examinations as part of the course. New vocal and instrumental students are entitled to one term of musicianship lessons at a greatly reduced rate.

Why do Musicianship classes? To become a holistic musician you must adopt the following:
• a high level of technical achievement – which can only be achieved through careful, well structured practice
• performance – it is what musicians live for! The constant exposure also helps to conquer the nerves and the anxieties associated with being on stage.
• musicianship – as the word suggests, is the underlying knowledge of being a musician and the backbone behind each great masterpiece. Musicianship is the study of music notation, harmony, analysis, history, composition, and the training of aural skills.

It is absolutely crucial to commence musicianship study – especially ear training – whilst young, so it becomes second nature. A common mistake is to leave it until exam times. This is ineffective, creates a stressful situation and certainly defeats the purpose of aural training.

Tuition is available in the form of one-to-one, shared classes (maximum of three people), and group classes. The students who have undergone musicianship training do and feel better in their music studies, examinations and performances. At Orange Regional Conservatorium, our musicianship staff are highly qualified and creative and will ensure that each lesson is interesting and fulfilling.

Our staff is aware of the current DET requirements for music study and constant reference is made, where applicable, to the Board of Studies Creative Arts Curriculum.

COMPOSITION Basic composition is a feature of the ORC Musicianship Course from the earliest stages. In this way, we avoid the all-too-common scenario of this essential, creative aspect of music being introduced at a late stage in the student’s development when it appears as something that is too hard and just plain foreign.

HSC SUPPORT Education in the more advanced principles and practices of composition is available to HSC level and beyond by our trained staff, with access to some of this country’s finest and most experienced composers.

WORKSHOPS All instrumental and vocal students are required to attend occasional workshops, for which there is a nominal fee. You will be notified when relevant workshops are to be held.

JUNIOR MUSIC ESSENTIALS ORC follows the Early childhood music Program with Junior Music Essentials, the transition stage between the awakening period of Early Childhood Music and the exciting adventure of one-to-one music study.

In Junior Music Essentials your child will learn to apply the concepts discovered and physicalised in the pre-school period and direct them in the same way that the first year of school focuses early social and developmental experiences to bring out the unique creative individual.

While using the experiences of ECM to access musical understanding, the child will start to explore and understand the connection between the tactile, the aural, and basic literacy skills.

The old story was that after Early Childhood Music experiences children waited for a few years until they could handle ‘serious music study’. Not any more! ORC has developed a dedicated, enjoyable linking program that maintains interest and stays in step with your child’s developmental stages.
