Zest Baroque, led by Andrew Baker, is the central west's own early music performance ensemble. Zest Baroque performs music from the 17th & 18th Centuries on authentic instruments & regularly performs in Orange & Regional NSW.

Zest Baroque uses instruments that are made as closely as possible to instruments from the late 1600's & 1700's. They are set up with authentic fittings & strings in order to replicate the real sound colours that would have been produced by original instruments. The strings used are made from gut, either open or wound with copper. This produces a softer volume & brighter, more resonant sound that is enhanced by tuning at ‘baroque’ pitch (a=415Hz rather than 440Hz).

The style of playing & the playing techniques used differs greatly from modern performance. One could imagine that the performance of a “Handel Cantata” for example, would sound as close as possible to the piece’s first performance in 1720.
